Mount Kenya Overview.

Mount Kenya is Africa’s second-highest mountain after Kilimanjaro. This extinct volcano is estimated to be 2.5 million years old. Time has taken its toll on the former, reducing the peak from 6500m to 5199 m today, while nature’s untiring eroding agents long ago eroded the crater. Mount Kenya is located about 200km north of Nairobi within the Mount Kenya National Park. The park protected an area of 3200m above sea level was established in 1949 and covers an area of 715 sq. km. The mountain comprises three main zones: - the rocky peak zone, the afro-alpine moorland with its scattering of giant vegetation, and the extensive tower slope covered with mountain forest and bamboo there are over 81plant species. Any fit and a prepared person can reach point Lenana, the so-called trekker’s peak; the summit has the twin peaks of 5199m Batian and Nelion and is considered more technically challenging than the higher Mt Kilimanjaro at 5894m.

Mount Kenya National Park.

Mount Kenya, at an altitude of 5199 [17058ft] is the country's highest mountain, has its higher slope permanently covered in snow and ice, even though it sits astride the equator. The National Park comprises the mountain above the 320m [10,500ft] contour plus two salient astride the Naro Moru and the Sirimon routes. The mountain consists of three peaks the Batian [the highest] Nelion and Lenana. Of these peaks, the original hard center core is all that remains; the bulk of the volcano has been eroded away with time.

Mount Kenya Climbing Routes.

Trekking Routes.

There are three main trekking routes leading to the base of Mount Kenya these are Naro Moru and Sirimon on the western side of the mountain and the Chogoria route to the eastern side of Mount Kenya.

The Naro Moru Route.

The Naro Moru route is the easiest and the best fastest and it is also the most popular route preferred by many onto the mountain, it is commonly used by many hikers, schools, scout groups, privately guided tours, family trips, tour companies and private guides and potters leading clients up to Point Lenana. It is not particularly scenic and the rapid ascent profile makes it unsuitable for climbers wishing to acclimatize more gradually and sensibly. The Naro Moru route also features the steep quagmire of wet moorland that is extremely taxing and unpleasant after rains. The final climb up to the Austrian Hut tackles a long, loose, and uncompromising scree slope up to the side of the Teleki Valley. Basically, you don't want to do this route unless you're in a hurry to bag Point Lenana on a quick 3-day program. Descending via the Naro Moru route is fine, though.

The Sirimon Route.

The Sirimon route is the least used by mountain climbers of the three main routes, but it features the most gradual ascent profile and is best for acclimatization options.

The route passes through very impressive Yellowwood forests in the lower reaches and features abundant wildlife and beautiful alpine scenery higher up.

The Austrian Hut and Point Lenana are reached from the head of Mackinder's Valley via Simba Col.

3 Chogoria Route.

Climbing from the Chogoria route is said to be the most scenic and interesting of the three main routes on the mountain. The route passes the enchanting Hall Tarns and looks down sheer cliffs into the spectacular Gorges Valley and onto the beautiful Lake Michaelson. The Austrian Hut is reached via Tooth Col at the head of the valley.

DAY 1: Nairobi-Nanyuki Trekking Mount Kenya.

Depart from Nairobi at 09:00hrs and proceed towards the cool slopes of Mt. Kenya. Cross the Equator and arrive at your hotel in Nanyuki in time for Lunch. Relax and enjoy the magnificent scenery around dinner and night in Nanyuki base hotel.

DAY 2: Nanyuki-Met Station Trekking Mount Kenya.

A morning spent sorting and organizing personal equipment for the mountain trek. After lunch, we drive to the road ahead of the Naro Moro Track, to the Meteorological station. This is a very good day for acclimatization, for we will be sleeping at an altitude of 10,000 ft. A short hike will be taken in the afternoon to help acclimatization.

DAY 3: Met station Mackin der's Camp Trekking Mount Kenya.

Hike up into the Teleki valley to Mackinder’s Camp where there is a spectacular view of the main peaks. Walking time approximately 4-6 hours. Overnight Teleki Valley, (14,000 ft.)

DAY 4: Mackinder’s Camp-Point Lenana-Nanyuki Trekking Mount Kenya.

A pre-dawn start is made to ensure a successful summit bid and to try to reach the summit in time for a clear view of the majestic scenery. After climbing Point Lenana we return to our base camp and then proceed down the gate and onward to Nanyuki for overnight.

DAY 5: Nanyuki-Nairobi Trekking Mount Kenya.

DAY 1: Nairobi-Nanyuki Trekking Mount Kenya Small Group Adventures.

DAY 2: Nanyuki-Old Moses Camp Trekking Mount Kenya Small Group Adventures.

After breakfast vehicle transfer to Sirimon park gate start your 5 hours hike to Old Moses camp for overnight (3300m), (5 to 6 hrs. hike) where you pass through a tropical rainforest and bamboo forest. All meals and overnight at the campsite.

DAY 3: Old Moses-Ship tons Camp Trekking Mount Kenya Small Group Adventures.

After breakfast hike to Ship ton’s camp (4200m) for overnight (5 to 6 hrs. hike), the walk takes you near to the summit. Ship ton’s camp has also an excellent setting with the north faces of Nelion peak and Batian peak facing it which provides a very beautiful scenery dinner and overnight at the ship tons camp.

DAY 4: Ship tons-Point Lenana-Mintos Hut Trekking Mount Kenya Small Group Adventures.

Wake up early at 2.30 am then attempt on Point Lenana (4985m) a pre-dawn attempt on point Lenana gives you enough time to reach the summit when the sun is rising and in clear weather which gives you clear scenery. Afterward, descend to Mintos hut overnight.

DAY 5: Mintos Hut-Chogoria Bandas Trekking Mount Kenya Small Group Adventures.

Descend leisurely to Chogoria park gate (3020m) for overnight. This area has spectacular views down into the Gorges Valley with Lake Michelson and Vivienne falls, and across on the other side, you can see Ithanguni peak, Rotundu peaks, and the Giant Flat -- top Kilingo Hill table.

DAY 6: Chogoria Banda’s-Nairobi Trekking Mount Kenya Small Group Adventures.

After breakfast descends leisurely to Chogoria town for transfer back to Nairobi. Chogoria gate to Chogoria town is about 3 - 4 hours, on dirt roads through a thick bamboo forest and tropical forest. DAY 3: Judmaier-Liki North Valley Camp.

After breakfast, we ascend the Sirimon Track to Liki North Valley and spend the night camped in this beautiful little valley below subsidiary peaks of Teleki and Sendejo, two ancient parasitic vents of the main peaks. Overnight stay in Liki North Valley, 13,000 ft.

DAY 4: Liki North Valley camp Mackinder's Camp.

Climb out of the North Valley and into the Mackinder’s valley, on the broadest valleys of Mt. Kenya. We camp at the head of the Mackinder’s valley camp, just below the main peaks of Batian and Nelion. 14,000ft.

DAY 5: Mackinder’s Camp-Point Lenana-Teleki Valley Camp.

Make an alpine ascent of the third highest peak, Point Lenana (16,355 ft.). This route up the north face is little used by tourists. Four hours of stiff walking to the summit. Descend to the Teleki Valley on the opposite side of the main peaks, to Mackinder’s Camp. Overnight Teleki Valley (13,000 ft.)

DAY 6: Teleki Valley-Met Station.

Descend to the Met. Station (Road head) on the Naro Moru Track and then back to the hotel for meals and overnight.

DAY 7: Met Station-Nairobi.

This itinerary is for the ascent of Pt. Lenana, the third peak of Mt Kenya, at an altitude of 4985 meters. This is not a technical climb, but a hike. Anyone with a reasonable level of fitness should be more than capable of completing the trek provided they approach it in a sensible manner. The ascent is via the Chogoria Route, on the little-used east side of the mountain.

Day 1

Pick up from the hotel at about 0800. It's then about 3 1/2 hours from Nairobi to where we collect the porters and guides (as required). Into the Mt. Kenya forest for the 22 km drives to the Park Gate at 2,850m. Dependent on road conditions, these 22 km have been known to take all afternoon to do and in really wet conditions it is possible that the top four or five km may be impassable. Night, dependent on clients wishes, at the Meru Mt. Kenya Banda's or at road head a further 7 km from the Park Gate.

Day 2

After breakfast and sorting of porter loads, we set off up the mountain at a nice and easy pace. A slightly longer walk via Lake Ellis gives scenic views of Mugi, Ithunguni, and the Giants Billiards Table, whilst if we follow the river near road head, upstream for about 3 km, the foreground scenery and flora is particularly beautiful. Lunch by the stream banks then it's time to cut up the left-hand hillside to our camp at about 3,600m, well away from any of the more "touristy" areas.

Day 3

Lake MichaelsonFrom our campsite, we continue to move up through the moorland zone. As this area of the mountain is still off the beaten track, there are no paths to follow, and on each trip, we vary the area we walk across. After about an hour, traverse left and join a ridge (slight path to follow) and join the normal Chogoria route to Minto's Hut after about 4-hour walking. Lunch at a small stream crossing then 45 min onto a camp near Minto's Hut and next to one of the trans. A very short afternoon walk over to superb views across to "The Temple" and down to Lake Michaelson.

Day 4:

After pre-dawn breakfast leaves Mintos Hut for the summit passing near the Simba Tarn and Harris Tanto Point Lenana which is approximately 4 - 5 hours. After the sunrise at 6.30 and nice views of Kilimanjaro and the Coast, the line descends back to Mintos for full breakfast and thereafter descend to Meru Mount Kenya Lodge(Banda’s) having our lunch at the Road head. Dinner and overnight at the Bandas.

Day 5:

After breakfast walk for 15km downhill through the dense rain and bamboo forests to connect the 4WD jeep to Chogoria Town. Then after lunch at Chogoria drive back to Nairobi for your next destination. End of your Trekking mounts Kenya tours active adventure activity holidays.

Summary

This is by far the most scenic and interesting route. It takes in both tropical forests and moorland.

Day 1: Nairobi-Chogoria.

Transfer from Nairobi to Chogoria to our base hotel. Rest and acclimatize for the remainder of the day.

Day 2: Mount Kenya.

Transfer to park gate dinner and overnight at the gate.

Day 3: Hike to Minto's Hut.

We ascend to Minto's hut at 4300m that is situated on a plateau overlooking Lake Michaelson 300m below. There are spectacular views of the summits from here

Day 4: Hike to Austrian Hut.

The trail continues to Austrian Hut via tooth cool which is situated between several rock towers. Overnight at Austrian Hut.

Day 5: Hike to The Summit.

Early morning starts to attempt the summit of Point Lenana, which is only about one hour from the Austrian hut. We will descend to Chogoria park gate for the night.

Day 6: Walk to Chogoria Exit.

An early morning (after breakfast) 15km walk through the rainforests and bamboo zones to our vehicle to transfer to Nairobi.
